Operation Fast & Furious: How the ATF Armed Mexican Cartels
The U.S. government deliberately put 2,000 firearms into the hands of Sinaloa Cartel sicarios. Two of those guns killed Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
From 2009 to 2011 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ran a program called Operation Fast and Furious in which they instructed Arizona gun shops to sell firearms to known cartel straw purchasers and then deliberately failed to interdict them. The official justification: trace the guns to high-level cartel figures.
The result: 2,000+ weapons disappeared into Mexico. They have been used in over 150 known killings. Two of them killed U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry on December 14, 2010.
Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to produce documents. President Obama invoked executive privilege - the first time since Watergate. What did they not want anyone to read?
