Craig Stephens 09/20/1948 - 02/27/2026
Craig passed away peacefully at home on February 27, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Born in Pasadena and raised in Arcadia, Craig was the eldest son of Sheila Hayward Stephens and Thomas Scott Stephens, and the oldest of five brothers -- Jeff, David, John, and Mark. His childhood was marked by close family bonds and summers in Newport Beach. There he developed a lifelong love of the ocean. He treasured those early years -- playing beach football, catching grunion at midnight, and spending hours playing gin rummy with his grandmother, Lucille Stephens, body surfing and especially surf fishing alongside his father.
Craig graduated from the University of Southern California in 1970, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After graduating, he served in the United States Army Reserves from 1970-1976, and completed basic training at Fort Ord. He maintained many meaningful, lifelong friendships from his early school days in Arcadia through college, the army and beyond.
In 1974, he married Sara Kathryn Callander. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship/love, and shared traditions. He was a devoted father to J.T., Clark, and Charles, and a proud grandfather to Cecilia, Nina, Cal, Hayes, Miller, Camille, Isla, and Nora Stephens.
Craig was deeply rooted in San Francisco. He was a member of the Guardsmen, the Olympic Club, the Bohemian Club (Midway Camp), and most importantly the San Francisco Golf Club. A scratch golfer, he found great joy in the game - not only in competition, but in the friendships it brought.
He loved and appreciated the natural beauty of California. He cherished time with family and friends fly fishing- especially for steelhead on the Klamath, Trinity, and McCloud rivers, and at Fallen Leaf Lake, where he was always in pursuit of the elusive ten-pound rainbow trout.
A devoted sports fan, Craig's loyalties reflected both his roots and his San Francisco home. He remained a lifelong supporter of the USC Trojans, the Lakers and the LA Dodgers, while embracing Bay Area teams, especially Cal football and basketball, the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers.
In San Francisco, Craig found joy in the rhythms of daily life. He cherished daily walks through the Presidio especially Baker Beach, and Land's End, always embracing views of the Pacific. He also relished a meal at Sam's Grill, a burrito from Gordo's, or a scoop of Rocky Road ice cream from Joe's.
Craig is survived by his wife, Sara; his sons J.T. (Sarah Rodrigues) Clark (Courtney Harris) and Charles (Barbora Sklenarova) and his eight grandchildren who affectionately called him "Pops". Craig is deeply missed. We will remember him for his love of family, his dedication to his friends, his enduring appreciation for the outdoors and the simple moments that made life meaningful.
A private celebration of his life was held in March at his home in San Francisco.
